About Us

Introduction / Overview

Banwari Shankar College, Simraha, was originally established in 1981 as Banwari Shankar Mahavidyalaya, Simraha, under Lalit Narayan Mithila University (LNMU). From the very beginning, the college offered both degree and intermediate courses. In 1989, the intermediate section received formal affiliation for the 10+2 level (for the 1989-90 batch) from the then Bihar Intermediate Education Council (BICE), which later merged into the present-day Bihar School Examination Board (BSEB), Patna. Over time, the degree section separated to function independently under BNMU, while the intermediate section continued to grow under BSEB. In 2006, the Government of Bihar under Shri Nitish Kumar ji recognized the college with a performance-based grant, a testament to our commitment to quality education.

The college is named after Banwari Shankar, a revered saint and social activist. His values of compassion, integrity, and service inspire our mission to create responsible future leaders.

Mission & Vision

Our vision is rooted in the Sanskrit saying “सा विद्या या विमुक्तये” — knowledge is that which liberates. We strive to produce socially sensitive, ethically sound students equipped for higher education and careers, advancing quality learning and professional skills while promoting democracy, human rights, sustainability, trust, courage, and respect. Prof. Yogendra Kumar, Principal, says: “We focus on academic excellence, holistic development, and fostering ethical values. Our aim is to create a learning environment that encourages critical thinking, creativity, and social responsibility.”

Location & Campus

The college is situated on a spacious campus along the National Highway in the Kahara block of Saharsa district, Bihar, accessible via all-weather roads with good connectivity to the state capital and nearby towns. The campus features a pucca boundary wall, well-ventilated classrooms (many digitally equipped), a library housing over 6,750 books, and fully functional laboratories for Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Computer Science. A dedicated playground, reliable electricity, clean drinking water from hand pumps, and separate toilet facilities for boys and girls ensure a safe and comfortable environment. Instruction is primarily in Hindi, with emphasis on English, and the college offers Arts, Science, and Commerce streams under the BSEB curriculum. The dedicated faculty provides regular guidance, assignments, tests, and career counseling, while nutritious meals are prepared and served on the premises.
